        Pasteurellosis is caused by 2 bacteria, namely Pasteurella multocida and Pasteurella haemolytica. These bacteria occur in the respiratory tract of normal sheep, but under abnormal conditions such as cold weather, malnutrition during droughts or other stress factors, the bacteria may multiply and produce pneumonia. It may also spread to other organs and cause a fatal infection. Special care must be taken if animals from a different area are introduced into an infected area.

        Q-fever is caused by the microorganism Coxiella burnetii and is a disease that affects many animals and humans. Ruminants can contract Q fever when grazing contaminated pastures and from tick bites.

        Rabies risk to sheep and goats is usually minimal, rabies vacciantions may be considered if the flock is located in a rabies-infected area and livestock have access to wooded areas or areas frequented by raccoons, skunks, foxes, or other known carriers of rabies.

        Scrapies the disesease has been recognized for more than 250 years. The unusual name was coined from sheep trying to relieve the intense itching which results in "scraping" off the wool. In 1947, scrapie was introduced into a Michigan flock through sheep imported from Britain. Scrapie has spread throughout the U.S. since that time.

        The Komondor Dog is the King of the Hungarian guarding dogs. The Komondor is a heavy-coated white dog descended from a Russian dog of the steppes called Aftscharka. Today's Komondor is “characterized by imposing strength, courageous demeanor, and pleasing conformation” according to the breed standard — the same traits that made him a herd guardian without equal in his native land.

        Kuvasz, a breed probably dating back to Turkey and Tibet but with its modern origin in Hungary. His name is derived from the Turkish for “armed guard of the nobility,” a job he performed with great skill. In the last half of the 15th Century, the Kuvasz was also used as a hunting dog by kings and aristocrats, and puppies were given as gifts to visiting noblemen and dignitaries.

        Some historians credit this breed with being the progenitor of all the mastiff breeds, making him the granddaddy of the livestock guardians and of such breeds as the English Mastiff, the Bullmastiff, the Dogue de Bordeaux, and the Neapolitan Mastiff. A native of the mysterious east in the region of the Himalayan Mountains, this is another loyal and powerful dog that passed these attributes to his distant descendants.
